IES Lighting Design Competition
The design centres on human presence as the driving force to illuminate a space. Integrating light metaphorically and practically, the design responds to occupancy density. Embodying the essence of human connection and illumination, its radiance grows brighter as people gather around, simultaneously revealing its full brilliance only in the presence of everyone.
Design Statement
The project explores the experience of a shared space to create something that is not only functionally and aesthetically pleasing but also carries a strong conceptual narrative and personal connection. The project begins with a reflection on significant communal meals and moments, considering traditions, rituals, and customs shared with friends, family, and community. The design challenge is to acknowledge and amplify these meaningful connections through a designed object for the communal table. The emphasis is on cultivating awareness and recognising the potential of design not only as a functional element but also as a conduit for social and community-based connections.
CMF and Ideation
Drawing inspiration from the warmth of hands around a flickering flame, this design concept fosters a sense of togetherness akin to tending a flame. This action is similar to preserving a fire, and keeping it alive by proximity. The lamp is designed to have a juxtaposition between textures and form. As individuals come together, their proximity activates the lamp's radiant glow, symbolising the collective power of community to amplify light and create a welcoming atmosphere.
Light Mechanism
Simulation of light functioning, the more the sensors are activated, the brighter the light output.
Working
Cup your hands around the lamp's base and witness as human togetherness brings it to life, glowing brighter with each connection made and presence felt.
The base houses four ultrasonic sensors that get activated when it detect movement in their close vicinity. The more sensors that get activated, the brighter the LED strip light.
